Although sometimes considered a Harlem Renaissance artist, Sargent Johnson (1888-1967) spent his career in the Bay Area; he was the first African American artist on the West Coast to achieve a national reputation. He was known for Abstract Figurative and Early Modern styles. He was a painter, potter, ceramicist, printmaker, graphic artist, sculptor, and carver.
