If you step back about 15′ and blur the image the embedded figure becomes visible. Visual scientists call this the block effect. It is most well known in several of Dali’s works. For example, Dali painted “Gala Contemplating the Mediterranean Sea, which becomes the portrait of Abraham Lincoln (Homage to Rothko)” from a distance. Painted in 1976, this Dali work is currently displayed in the museum in Figueras, where it is indeed possible to observe the painting from the appropriate distance.
