Gerald Murphy (1888-1964) was born in Boston to the family that owned the Mark Cross Company, sellers of fine leather goods. He painted from 1921 until 1929 and is known for his hard-edged still life paintings in a Precisionist, Cubist style.

He and his wife, Sara Sherman Wiborg, are widely recognized as the characters Nicole and Dick Diver of Tender Is the Night by F. Scott Fitzgerald.
